I wanted to try something new in a unique environment after being in the same school for the past 13 years.
I’ve always wanted to study abroad. While I initially wanted to be in the west coast of the US, I chose to go to the east after looking at universities.
I took some time to create a thought-out list of 12 universities I wanted to apply to. These 12 schools had varying difficulty levels, with some schools having an acceptance rate of less than 10 while others were a bit easier to get in. While I ultimately did not apply to every single one of the schools, that list gave me an idea of what to expect.
I chose the schools using two majors; biotech and environmental sciences. Since the former involves computer science, it was a bit more difficult to find schools that provide a degree similar to that. I also factored in location and student life, since after all I want to be in a place I enjoy for the next 3-4 years.
Balancing extracurriculars, college applications, and school work was rough, but with the help of people around me I was able to get it done. The biggest piece of advice I would have is to properly utilize the resources provided to you, and let other experienced people help you on this part of the journey.
5.TOEFL/IELTS/SAT
I spent a decent amount of time studying for the SATs, but I still struggled to hit the 1500 mark. The TOEFL was a bit easier, but looking back I really should have known what would come up on the test.
While I wasn’t able to get the highest SAT score, I was able to be content after my 2nd time taking the test (after studying) For the TOEFL, I didn’t really know what to expect, so I am content with my score. If I were to aim for a full marks test in the future, it would likely take me longer.
As I stated previously, the biggest piece of advice I would have is to properly utilize the resources provided to you, and let other experienced people help you on this part of the journey. I struggled with communication with my school counselors, which led to harsh deadlines and work piling up. Stay on top of your work, communicate with people, and just get it done.
Shoutout to Gwen I truly believe I wouldn’t have made it without you. She single-handedly carried me into university. While I’m not sure if she’s going to see this, thank you so much, and I appreciate everything you did for me in that short time.
As going to university overseas isn’t a one or done endeavor, I think there is significant importance in staying on top of your studies for your entire high school career. While this seems simple, universities overseas have a holistic view of students. This means having consistent grades, contributing to the community, and having a good work life balance. While I didn’t have all of those, I believe that helped me a lot.
Unfortunately, going to university in the US is a very expensive experience as of now. I aim to graduate in 3 years to minimize the debt I will have when I graduate.
Good luck to everyone aiming to go overseas for the next step in their academic journey. You are in very good hands.
