9/14 2023-24 LSAC Law School Forums Law Schools at the September Digital Forum – LLM only

いよいよ９月に入り、出願書類の準備をスタートさせるアプリカントも増えてきました。New York University（締め切り日：2023年12月20日）を含め、その他のLL.M.プログラムからも続々と締め切り日が発表されています。

『出願書類』と聞いて真っ先に頭に浮かぶのが、レジュメ、パーソナルステートメント、そして推薦状でしょう。こうした各書類の作成に向けた準備計画を立てることはもちろんですが、これら以外にもアプリケーションフォームを忘れてはいけません。アプリケーションフォームには様々な入力項目(項目数は各校で異なるものの、多いところでは20項目ほど)が並び、これらの入力作業だけでも相応の時間を必要とします。そして、その項目には以下のような設問も含まれることがあります。

Q. If you attended a recruiting session, please provide the date and location. (Maximum characters 250)

LL.M.アプリカントを対象とするrecruiting sessionは、i) LL.M.アプリカント向け（ライブ・オンライン）、ii) LSACが主催するLL.M.アプリカント向け（ライブ・オンライン）に分類できます。上述のような設問は、If you attendと問いかけてはいるものの、出願先への関心度の高さをアドミッション側へ伝えるためにも、そうした設問に回答できるよう準備してはいきましょう。

先日、Columbia Law Schoolから受信したメールには以下の内容が記載されていました。

We are excited to announce that applications are open for Columbia Law School’s Executive LL.M. in Global Business Law and LL.M. programs! The application deadline for both programs is December 1, 2023.

“applications are open”は、“入力可能“を意味します。多数の入力項目欄はあるものの、入力した内容を保存する機能も備わっているたえ、隙間時間を活用しながら、準備を進めることが可能です。

■ 適切な出願時期とは？
出願情報を調査する中で、締め切り日にはi) Rolling Admissionsとii) Regular Decision Policyの二つのタイプが存在することがお分かりいただけると思います。そして、Rolling Admissionsを採用するUniversity of Virginiaの出願要綱には下記の内容が確認できます。

Although completed LL.M. applications are not due until Feb. 1, the Graduate Committee follows a “rolling admissions” policy and offers of admission may be made before the Feb. 1 deadline. Therefore, it is advantageous to apply early.

2月1日を待たずして、どのタイミングで出願するのが得策なのでしょうか？この判断基準として、i) ここ数年間の出願傾向、ii) 難易度、iii) カリキュラム内容を精査した上でのフィット感の３つを考慮することが重要です。一方で、出願傾向は流動的なものですから、『過去はこうだったから今でも・・』といった考え方は当てはまりませんのでご注意ください。

この『Rolling Admissions』を採用する学校は他にも存在します。学校の特徴を理解することはもちろんですが、こうした出願情報も確認した上で、合格のための戦略を策定していきましょう。

      ※合計スコアだけではなく、セクションごとに要求スコアが設定される場合も多くあります。
      例：Harvard: a minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 25 on each subsection
      University of Pennsylvania: a TOEFL score of at least 100 (with at least 23 in each section) or IELTS score of 7 (with at least 7 in each section). If your test score(s) fall below the above targets, you should address your English language skills in your personal statement or have your recommenders address your English language abilities in their letters

Georgetown LL.M.の出願締め切り日11/15 (Early Action), 2023/2/3 (Regular Deadline)が発表になりました。

Personal Statement

All applicants must submit a detailed “personal statement” (a.k.a. motivation letter) describing your background, goals, and reasons for applying to Georgetown and your chosen program. You should include any information that you feel will assist the Graduate Admissions Committee in its decision. This information should provide the admissions committee with more depth than is available in your transcripts and resume alone regarding your fit for the program and school.
While there are no specific formatting requirements the personal statement should only be 1-2 pages (single spaced) or 2-3 pages (double spaced).

Personal Statementを書き始めるにあたり、フォーマット（フォントサイズや余白の長さを含））にも注意を払いましょう。各校で指定されるフォーマット内容が異なるケースもあります。

Georgetownの場合は、長さ：1-2 pages (single spaced) or 2-3 pages (double spaced)と指定されています。Double spaced・3 pagesという条件の元では、約1,000 wordsを使うことが可能です。

また、New York University, University of Pennsylvaniaの出願締め切り日も相次いで発表されました。

中国が日本人留学生のビザ受け付け再開　コロナ禍初期以来2年半ぶり

中国への留学を検討されている方への朗報です！

在日中国大使館は8/23、日本人留学生のビザ申請の受け付けを再開すると発表した。中国政府は新型コロナウイルスの流行を受けて、約2年5カ月にわたって日本人留学生のビザの申請を受け付けておらず、渡航できない留学生がいる状態が続いていた。

9月からPersonal Statementの執筆に取り組むために、Resume の作成を通して自分の強み（アピールポイント）は整理できていますか？このレジュメをもとにPersonal statementやLetter of recommendationで言及する実例を選定しましょう。

Personal Statement (Stanford LL.M.):2-3 pages

パーソナルステートメントに着手する前に、まずは以下の項目に対して該当する内容を書き纏めてみましょう。

1) Experience in legal practice
2) Interest in LL.M. in the applicable specialization
3) Post LL.M. goals
4) How the Stanford LL.M. program could benefit your career progress

その纏めたコンテンツを所定のページ数で収めるためにも、アウトラインや段落ごとの字数も考えなければなりません。

Two letters of recommendation (Stanford LL.M.)

It is suggested that LLM applicants obtain one letter from someone familiar with their work in legal practice (or related professional experience) and one letter from someone familiar with their academic work. At least one letter should be from someone with whom the applicant has worked who can address the applicant’s English-language proficiency.

ここでは出願者の英語力に関して問われることから、実例も慎重に見極めたいところです。

出願締切日から逆算してタスクを整理しましょう

この先の書類準備を円滑に進めるためには、今月８月末までにはレジュメを仕上げることをお勧めします。そして9月からパーソナルステートメントの執筆へ注力できるように計画を図ることで、心理面にも余裕が生まれ、よりクオリティーの高い書類へと仕上げるため推敲用の時間も確保できるようになります。また、必要に応じてテストスコアの底上げにも時間を充てることができます。
