Columbia MBA Admission Deadlines & Essays for 2022-2023

Columbia MBA（CBS）が応募要項を発表しました。M7プログラムの中でCBSのみがrolling admission（早く出願した方から随時審査を行う制度）を採用しております。また、CBSはJanuaryとAugustと年に２回のプログラム開始時期があり、それぞれのプログラムに特徴があります。応募者は自分に最適なプログラムを選ぶことができます。そしてAugust intakeのみEarly Decision(Early)と呼ばれるCBS第一志望者むけの出願締切が設定されています。

CBS出願にむけては、エッセイをはじめとした応募書類の準備に加えて、上述の点を考慮した出願プランを検討することが必要です。

Essays

Applicants must complete one short answer question and three essays.

Short Answer Question: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters maximum)

Essay 1

Through your resume and recommendation, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what is your long-term dream job? (500 words)

LL.M.出願 合格までのロードマップ

前回のブログでは、Harvard Law Schoolの2023年入学向け出願締め切り日やパーソナルステートメントに関する情報を共有しました。その後、UCLAも出願締め切り日を発表しました（2023年2月1日）。その他の主なトップLL.M.プログラムは8月から9月上旬に出願情報を公開し、出願締め切り日は、12月上旬から1月中旬にかけて集中します。本日はこの先出願までの準備項目を整理します。

■　6月：
レジュメの作成方法を把握し、作成に必要な情報を整理する（過去の棚卸し作業）
LSACの使い方（有料サービス内容含）を把握するため、入力用アカウントを取得する
出願に必要な書類の役割を把握、大学、法科大学院、大学院の成績表を取り寄せ、評定平均値 (G.P.A.)を算出する
法科大学院未修者で法曹資格を持っていない方々は、出願資格の有無を各ロースクールへ問い合わせを行う

■　7月：
LSACの出願関連有料サービスを申し込み、その後に大学、法科大学院、司法研修所などの英文成績表をLSACへ送付する（高等教育の経歴内容により、送付する書類が異なるためご注意ください）
レジュメの作成に着手し、月末には完成させる

■ 8月：
パーソナルステートメントと推薦状の作成方法を把握する。各書類で使用する情報を仕分ける

エッセイ課題は昨年と変更はありませんでした。

2023年MBA入学を目指す方、特に９月の1stラウンドでの出願を目指す方は本格出願書類作成の準備開始です。志望理由の整理、自身のこれまでのキャリアの整理を開始しましょう。

エッセイ課題の種類を理解する

エッセイ課題は主に以下の3つに分類されます。まず、これらの理解を深めることがエッセイ作成準備の第一歩です。

Vision essay
キャリアゴールエッセイといわれるものです。主に①なぜ皆さんのキャリア開発にMBAが必要か、②特定のプログラムへの志望動機、③MBA卒業後のキャリアゴールを問う課題になります。この課題に正しくアプローチするためには、①②③に対しての整理ができていることが必要です。エッセイの中で頻出の課題になります。

How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA program to help you achieve your future professional goals? You might consider your past experience, short and long-term goals, and resources available at Wharton. (500 words)

Strengths essay
Leadership/Teamwork/Problem-solving/Creativity など実に幅広い領域で出願者の強みを問う課題になります。

Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire brave leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn? (450 words)

Personality essay
MBA留学を有意義にするためには。クラスで知識を向上させるだけではなく、積極的にMBAコミュニティ活動に所属し、クラスメートとの交流を図り、自己成長（personal growth）やネットワーキングの機会を得ることも重要です。このMBAコミュニティの意義を理解しているか、そのコミュニティにあなたがふさわしいか、適正があるかを問う課題になります。

An MBA is as much about personal growth as it is about professional development. In addition to sharing your experience and goals in terms of career, we’d like to learn more about you outside of the office. 出願校のエッセイ課題の理解を深める

上記の基本整理を行った上で、志望校のエッセイ課題に正しくアプローチするために必要なステップを記します。

Mission Statement/Admission Criteriaの理解

各学校は出願者に求めている人材像を上記に具体的に記しています。そして、出願者にその資質を持ち合わせているかを出願書類を通じて理解することを想定しています。さらに、このプロセスを行うことは、皆さん自身も自分に合った学校に進学することを確認する上でも重要なプロセスです。

エッセイ課題全体の理解と各エッセイの活用方法の戦略ねり

各学校は求めている人物像を確認するツールとして、エッセイ課題を活用します。さらに、エッセイは１題だけではなく複数設定されていることも多いので、やみくもに各課題に回答するのではなく、エッセイ課題やその他オンラインアプリケーション内の質問も含めて、課題全体で自分の強みをアピールすることを考えることが重要です。まず、全体像を決め、その上で、１つ１つの問いに回答することが効果的なアプローチとなります。

LLM出願書類対策：Harvard編 Part-2　Personal Statementの重要性


今回は2020-21 Application Sample（昨シーズンのもの）使って、Personal Statementで求められることを一緒に考えていきたいと思います。

The Personal Statement is an essential component of your application. It provides an opportunity for you to present ideas and demonstrate your writing ability to the Committee on Graduate Studies. Please limit your statement to no more than 1,500 words, anything exceeding this limit will be disregarded, Please note that footnotes do not count towards the overall word limit as long as they are limited to providing sources and citations.
Harvard Law Schoolに限ったことではありませんが、各スクールから指定される字数制限（Word Limit）は厳守してください。字数を指定し、その範囲内で自らの意見をまとめる力（ライティング力）も評価の対象となります。

The Personal Statement must be solely the product of your own efforts. We reserve the right to disqualify the application of a candidate who has submitted a Personal Statement written by, or with the help of, someone other than the candidate.

Personal Statementのドラフトを日本語で完成させ、翻訳会社に英訳を依頼する方法について質問を受けることがあります。”The product of your own efforts”の解釈として、自分でドラフトを作り上げる（第三者によるproof readingは除く）ようお願いします。第三者が英訳しますと、アドミッション側はアプリカントの英語力に関して評価のしようがありません。こうした行為は行わないようくれぐれもご注意ください。

Your personal statement should address both of the following questions specifically, with Part (A) constituting at least half of the total length.

(A) Briefly describe either an important issue in your field of interest or a current legal problem facing a particular country, region, or the world, and then propose a theoretical framework or a legal analysis or strategy to address this issue.

(B) Please tell us something about yourself- in particular, why you wish to pursue an LL.M degree at Harvard and how dosing so connects with what you have done in the past and what your plant to do in the future.

Application を作成する上では、複数の書類でLL.M.取得後の目標について記述するといった重複する行為は回避しなければなりません (Personal Statementで短期目標等を言及する必要はありません)。

同校を卒業した学生がLegal Professionalとして、さらなる成長を遂げるための原動力として、ビジョンを描く力がを求めていることが読み取れます。法曹界におけるリーダーを育成する同校の教育方針がエッセイ課題に反映されています。

Video Statement

Applicants are required to upload a 1 minute (60 seconds) video as part of their application. In your video, you should introduce yourself to your future classmates, tell us about your past experiences, and touch on why MIT Sloan is the best place for you to pursue your degree.

Videos should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • No more than 1 minute (60 second) in length
  • Single take (no editing)
  • You should be speaking directly to the camera
  • Do not include background music or subtitles

We recommend using applications such as QuickTime or iMovie to record yourself.  Upload the video file according to the detailed instructions within the application.

We support the following file formats: .avi, .flv, .m1v, .m2v, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mpeg, .mpg, .mp4, .webm, .wmv. Apple ProRes is not currently supported. If uploading a .mov, please use an alternate codec.

Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:

Six images that help illustrate who you are.
A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.
