1) LSACサービスの確認と必要情報の登録

LSACのアカウントを取得されていない方は、アカウント取得→サービス申込を行ってください。

LSACのサービス申し込み用サイトでは、下記3種類のサービス内容が紹介されています。日本人アプリカントの場合、以下すべてのサービスにお申込みいただくことになります。

Electronic Application Processing Service (EAPS) — $35 fee

    • Submit electronic applications to law schools.

Document Assembly Service (DAS) — $50 fee

    • Arrange for letters of recommendation (LORs) to be sent once to LSAC for forwarding to law schools.
    • Arrange for transcripts to be sent once to LSAC for forwarding to law schools (no evaluation is completed).
    • Complete and transmit admission applications online.
    • Arrange for TOEFL / IELTS scores to be sent once to LSAC for forwarding to law schools.

International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES) — $135 in addition to $50 Document Assembly Service (for applicants educated outside the US only)

    • Have official institution documents sent once to LSAC for evaluation, authentication, and transmission to participating law schools.

Note: If you wish to purchase the international Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES), you must also purchase the Document Assembly Service. When you click “Add ITAES to Cart” button, both services will automatically be added to your cart.

Essays

Applicants must complete one short answer question and three essays.

Short Answer Question: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters maximum)

Examples of possible responses:

  • “Work in business development for a media company.”
  • “Join a strategy consulting firm.”
  • “Launch a data-management start-up.”

Essay 1

Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what, in your imagination, would be your long-term dream job? (500 words)

Essay 2 and 3: Please respond to two (2) of the three (3) essay questions listed below:

  • The Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership (PPIL) is a new co-curricular program designed to ensure that every CBS student develops the skills to become an ethical and inclusive leader. Through PPIL, students attend programming focused on give essential diversity, equity, and inclusion skills: Creating an Inclusive Environment, Mitigating Bias, Communicating Across Identities, Addressing Systemic Inequality, and Managing Difficult Conversations. Tell us about a time you were challenged around one of these five skills.  Describe the situation, the actions you took, and the outcome. (250 words)
  • Why do you feel Columbia Business School is a good fit for you? (250 words)
  • Tell us about your favorite book, movie, or song and why it resonates with you? (250 words)

Optional Essay

2022年LLM合格にむけてVirtual information sessionの活用の勧め

2020年LLMの出願を振り返って、例年と大きく異なったのが、Virtual information sessionの活用です。特に、コロナの影響による2021年9月の入学枠への影響、テストスコアに関する情報を収集し、いち早く出願戦略に活用されている点が印象的でした。

2020-2021 Columbia LLM 出願締め切り日変更　Early review option の設定を行わない方針

Columbia LLMの出願締切のポリシーの変更が発表されました。コロナウィルスの影響を受けての変更とみられます。

以前に設定されていたEarly review option の設定を行わずに、Regular roundのみの締め切りの設定に変更

The application for the 2021-2022 LL.M. Program is now available, and the deadline to submit an application is December 18, 2020.

出願結果についてのregular roundとして以下の日程での発表予定となります
Admission decisions for the 2021-2022 LL.M. Program will be sent by mid-March.

当校で直接大学のアドミッションに問い合わせを行った際の学校の回答を記します。

Thank you for your email. Due to the unique structure of this year’s program, there will not be an early review option for applicants to the 2021-2022 LL.M. Program. Instead, all admission decisions will be sent by March 15. There is no advantage to submitting applications early, other than giving LSAC more time for document processing.

Update for 2021 application period: GRE/GMAT test requirements

コロナウィルスの影響をうけて、Columbia SIPA ではGMAT/GRE試験の提出を免除することができることを
発表しました。試験免除を希望する方は、試験免除を申請する際の注意事項（学校がもとめていること）をよくお読みください。そして、ご自身のアカデミックバクグラウンド、職務内容をよく検討した上で選択されることをお勧めします。

■Columbia SIPAの発表
GRE or GMAT scores are required of all applicants, as we have found them to be useful indicators of academic ability.

In light of disruptions caused by COVID-19 to the administration of these tests and the ability of many applicants to prepare for them, SIPA will accept applications for admission for January 2021 and September 2021 without GRE/GMAT scores.

Applicants who do not submit GRE/GMAT scores must inform the Admissions Committee of the reason for the omission and provide other evidence not already apparent from their files of their ability to successfully complete SIPA’s program, such as coursework requiring significant quantitative capabilities taken after their undergraduate studies.

SIPA still has no minimum GPA or GRE/GMAT scores. The Admissions Committee carefully reviews every application in its entirety, including test scores, grades (particularly those in relevant coursework), letters of reference, and the applicant’s personal statement and work experience.

You can find the waiver request form on the Admissions FAQs page. Please note that this update is just for the 2021 application cycle. You can only request a waiver once you have created an application for the 2021 cycle. At this time, we expect the 2021 application to go live this August.

2021年LLM入学希望の方へ　Early Review締切まで5カ月　効果的な準備方法を検討しましょう

コロナウイルスの影響は皆さんのLLM準備に影響を与えているものとお察しします。具体的には、TOEFL/IELTSテストの受験機会も限定される中で、思ったようなテスト対策プランを進めることが難しいというお声をよく頂きます。

一方で、Columbia, Harvardは2021年秋入学用の締め切り日を発表しました。Columbiaを例にとると、Early Reviewの締め切りは2020年11月1日です。そして夏場以降にかけて多くのロースクールにおいて出願情報が発表されます。上述の2校の発表内容から推察するに、出願締め切り日は例年と変わりがないと考えられます。

■11月の早期締め切り日を意識した準備プランが重要
来週からは6月へと突入します。11月のEarly Review出願締切日から逆算した5カ月間の活用方法の検討が重要です。特に、6月以降に仕事の繁忙期を迎える方々は、準備スケジュールを週単位で作成していくなど、常に一歩先を読んだ計画が必要になります。

LL.M. Personal statementを分析　Columbia LL.M. 2021年入学に向けて

前回の投稿に続き、Columbia LL.M.のFAQサイトから重要ポイントを確認していきたいと思います。

Q, Do you have any tips for the personal statement?

Your personal statement should describe your background, academic interests, the program of study you wish to follow, and your reasons for pursuing that program. Because you are also submitting a résumé or CV, your personal statement should not simply be a restatement of that information.

Formatting requirements:
• Double-spaced
• 12-point font
• Standard margins
• No more than three pages

上記Personal Statement課題で問われていることを細分化してみます。
1) Your Background
2) Academic Interest
3) The Program of study you wish to follow
4) Your reasons for pursuing that program

1) Your Backgroundという表現自体は広範囲なキャリアへ言及しているように思われますが、ここでは大学以降の経験に絞りましょう。その一方で、Because you are also submitting a résumé or CV, your personal statement should not simply be a restatement of that information.と記されています。Resume/CVに記した数多くの実績を単に重複させるのではなく、これらの実績をさらに掘り下げてPersonal Statementで使用することが求められています。この点から、まずResume/CVのコンテンツからあなたにとって重要な実績を選定することから作業をスタートしましょう。

2) Columbia LL.M.プログラム入学後に学びたい分野（例：Litigation & Dispute Resolution）へ興味/関心を抱いた経緯を考えてみましょう。

3) ここではLL.M.を取得するきっかけとなったエピソードを考えましょう。

Q. I missed the application deadline of December 18, 2020. Can I still apply for the 2021–2022 program?

A. No. Check back in September 2020 for the application to the 2022–2023 program.

【チェックポイント】Columbiaの場合は12月18日までに書類一式を提出することが求められます。締め切り日以降に提出した書類も席の空き状況に応じて受け入れる(Rolling Admissions Cycle System)を導入するロースクールとは条件が異なりますのでご注意ください。

Q. Do I need to wait for LSAC to process my transcripts, letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores before I can submit my online application?

A. No. Submit your online application as soon as you have completed it. LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS) will forward a copy of these documents to us in a report that will automatically attach itself to your application.

【チェックポイント】
Columbiaへの出願に限らず、LSAC (Law School Admissions Council)の出願書類提出サービス（Credential Assembly Service：通称CAS）使用が多くのロースクールで必須となっています。成績表、テストスコアレポート、推薦状の準備が整い次第、LSACへ随時提出してください。

Q. LSAC told me that my documents will not be processed by the December 18, 2020 deadline. Will my application still be considered?

A. Yes. Our application deadline is a postmark deadline. This means that your online application must be submitted and your transcripts and letters of recommendation posted by mail to LSAC by December 18, 2020. We account for delays in processing.

【チェックポイント】
上記回答箇所にはTranscript（成績表）とletters of recommendation (推薦状)はLSACへ12月18日までに必着です。特に推薦状をオンラインではなく郵送する際には十分な時間を確保ください。

Q, Does applying through the Early Review Program increase my chances of admission?

A. No. This program only guarantees a decision by late December. We encourage early applications for those who feel they have compiled their strongest possible application by November 1.

【チェックポイント】
「11月1日のEarly Review Programを逃すと合格確率が下がりますか？」という質問をよく受けます。最重要事項は、早期出願書類提出が目的ではなく、合格水準するレベルの書類を提出することです。

Q. Will Columbia confirm that my application was received?

A. Yes, we will send you an email confirmation that includes a link to our online Application Status page. We will also notify you when your application is deemed complete. In order to be sensitive to all cultures and identities, we address official application correspondence to your first and last name.

【チェックポイント】
受験生の誰しもが出願書類の受領状況は気になるところですが、上述の通りan e-mail confirmationの着信状況を自らのメールアカウントでご確認ください。
