TOEFLリスニングの壁：語句の用法に慣れているか？（その１）　– by 加藤

私が担当しているクラスの一つに、「TOEFL iBT® Listening Practice Advancedクラス」というものがあります。そこで扱う教材（ETSの過去問の中の会話問題）に次のようなListen Again Q（会話の一部が再生され、その内容を問う設問）があります。

【場面設定】 レポートのトピックを決める際の、学生と教授とのやり取りです：

ナレーター：　Listen again to part of the conversation. Then answer the question.
学生：　The section on dialects? ‘Cause, like, that’s the kind of thing that’s always sort of intrigued me, you know?
教授：　Well, that’s certainly an interesting topic, but you may not realize, I mean, the scope. . .
ナレーター：　What can be inferred about the professor when he says this:
教授：　Well, that’s certainly an interesting topic, but you may not realize, I mean, the scope. . .

上記の部分を音声で聞いて、次の設問に答えます。皆さんはどれが正解だと思いますか？


Q. What can be inferred about the professor when he says this:
(A) He thinks the topic goes beyond his expertise.
(B) He thinks the topic is too broad for the student to manage.
(C) He thinks the topic is not relevant for a linguistics class.
(D) He thinks other students may have chosen the same topic.

これまでの受講生の反応から、この問題は結構難しいと感じる方が多いようです。

その大きな原因は、語られた内容が少ないことに加えて、教授のセリフの最後にあるthe scopeの意味と用法に馴染みがないことではないでしょうか。
